Unintentionally baffling

There’s a woman up ahead carrying a canvas bag with the words “I NERDS” printed on it. Between those words is an image of Hello Kitty—the adorable Japanese cartoon cat whose countenance has emblazoned nearly every sort of thing known to man. Presumably the intended reading is “I ♥ nerds” which is meant to be shorthand for “love” or “I love nerds” reminiscent of the famous “I ♥ NY” design.

Yet there’s no symbolic meaning of a cartoon cat—adorable though she may be—to be read in such a way to make any sense. Even the decidedly less vulgar British use of the term “pussy” makes scant little sense in this manner.

Did I mention that Hello Kitty is wearing a pair of thick-framed black glasses? Such eyewear is shorthand for “nerd”—they tend to have less than perfect vision. In that case the message would be “I ‘nerd’ nerds” and that isn’t much better.
